Bursary Program
Eight Educational Bursaries Offered to Community Members
Our main initiative for 2008 was to offer community members broader access to educational opportunities through bursaries. Eight bursaries of $3000 each were awarded to students accepted for degree and diploma programs at both universities and community colleges. Criteria for selection included:
- Resident of the defined neighbourhood. See Photo Gallery.
- Educational achievement and awards
- Community involvement, volunteer work and leadership activities
- Financial costs of the program against other source of funds for candidates
A committee comprised of two board members and Rev. Rhonda Britton, Senior Pastor at Baptist Cornwallis Church selected the candidates from many qualified applicants. We thank Rev. Britton for her generous time and committment.
The candidates were notified in June 20, 2008. Initial bursary installments have been disbursed. We thank all candidates who have applied.
Educational bursary recipients for will be announced by mid July, 2008. All candidates will be notified.
Owida Bruce Downey was a remarkable woman. On top of being a loving wife, mother and grandmother she was a tireless volunteer. Humble, she was not one to draw attention to herself but went about quietly, persistently making her community a better place to live. She was editor and the spirit behind the CHCA community newspaper for North End Halifax. She was also on the Board of the Community Liaison Committee, the association that preceded and helped to form the Halifax Community Investment Fund.
One of the bursaries was given in Owida's name because she embodies the kind of community leadership that we hope this program inspires and supports
